White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose) by Mark Rothko
1950, oil on canvas
You all know Mark Rothko, right? If not, you should. He's one of the most influential artists of the Abstract Expressionism movement, which is one of the most important post-war art movements thus far. Abstract Expressionism cracked open the world of art and changed the idea of what art could be. Rothko was a skilled artist, and this piece--White Center--sold for over $72 million, which is a record for the most any post-war artwork has ever sold for. Amazing. SIA submissions are due to me by the evening of Monday, June 17th. Enjoy, y'all!
