The master

Top: J.Crew Factory | Skirt: J.Crew Factory | Wedges: Payless

One of my main, constantly repeating memories of my grandfather is from Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the summer when I was a kid. My grandfather--Pop Pop--absolutely loved golf. And despite living a five minute walk from the ocean, he committed his weekends to watching golf in his recliner. I can remember coming back from a long day at the beach and taking a shower either in the one bathroom in the house or outside under the outdoor shower, and getting changed and then coming to watch golf with him in the living room while I ate either Goldfish or cottage cheese. I don't know why this is so memorable to me; it's a tiny memory of my grandfather, compared to the things he did while I was alive. But every time The Masters rolls around and golf begins in earnest, I'm reminded of Pop Pop and his blue recliner and the taste of salt water and even saltier Goldfish.

And I'm quite thankful for that.

What to wear to a Nickel Creek concert

Nickel Creek, with Josh Ritter
August 14th @ 7:30pm
Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary, NC

E. wore:

I wore:

There are some musicians that you should just feel honoured to watch perform. Like Bob Seger, or Reba McEntire. Or Dolly Parton, or Queen (while Freddie was still alive, of course). There are artists who just take music and performing to a whole different level. It's a surreal experience--an unforgettable one.

Nickel Creek, to me, is like that. The honour that I felt sitting in my folding chair ten rows from the front as Nickel Creek came out onto the stage nearly swelled out of my body and into the air around me. I've been a fan of Nickel Creek since I was a middle school and I have wanted to see them for nearly as long, and when they broke up in 2007, I was crushed. I thought I had lost my opportunity to experience something great.

And then, this year, they got the band back together. And I about had a meltdown and bought tickets and then asked one of my all-time favourite people, E., to come with me, since she lives about 45 minutes from Cary. And she said yes, so we went! I was thrilled; I haven't seen E. since last August, and we haven't had time to chat much in the last few months. My mom loves E. and has noted once or twice that whenever I'm around E. she brings out something better in me. Stronger, wiser, nicer. She's one of three people with whom I can tolerate a long road trip. She never makes fun of my weird eating habits. Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like E.

So between spending my evening with E. and seeing some of the most exceptional musicians on the planet, I feel very honoured indeed.

America Eve

Necklace: gift from friend T. | Top: Old Navy via Dani at DIYFATSHION | Belt: Target | Skirt: Target via Dani at DIYFATSHION | Sandals: Ross | Lips: NARS Jungle Red

Happy America Eve, y'all! I spent my day building spreadsheets. BE JEALOUS. I also drew a bumblebee with sunglasses! Suave. It is very late in Cardiganland and I have been cooking/prepping for 4th of July all evening, so I'm going to bed without saying a lot, but Dani gave me this whole outfit and I feel like she deserves a giant glass of American beer for that. Good American beer though, not like...Coors Light. I'm sorry but I can't support that. Happy Independence Day, everyone!

I don't think I ever introduced my tattoo to the blog. I got it in July, so it's been around for a while, but still. I have no immediate plans for another mobile, but who knows? Maybe that's why I have such big arms--more room for mobiles!

How the west was lost

Top: J.Crew Factory | Skirt: Talbots | Sandals: Ross? | Pin: borrowed from my dad

This skirt is just American enough for me to remember 9/11 but not American enough for me to be Toby Keith about it. September 11th seems to have fallen off the face of importance already, but when I think "already", I remember that it was twelve years ago and in the world, twelve years ago is enough to leave almost anything by the wayside. I feel like my age was of large import regarding my staunch memory of 9/11--I was 15 and it was my first time encountering anything bad and I didn't know what came next, the same way that when Pope John Paul II died I didn't know what going to happen. Wars and white smoke are apparently what happened. But September 11th was an odd awakening for me, and terribly enough, I was better off for it. The delicacy of the world was shattered before I actually had to enter it, and that was kind of a good thing, at least for me. Not for humanity, though. That's another story.

Creepin

Top: J.Crew Outlet | Jeans: Walmart | Sandals: Ross

you haven't seen my favourite wall in a while because it was painted over by a new company in front of the wall and I got all sad about it. when I was thinking about venues for today's photos, I thought well, a black wall would be better than greenery. (This doesn't seem like the kind of outfit that works with greenery.) So I pulled in the lot, and DO MINE EYES DECEIVE ME?! New graffiti on the wall! Ohmygosh, so happy. I danced around the parking lot and took my pictures and turned to leave and as I folded up my tripod, a creepy van rolled ever so slowly by the entrance to the parking lot.

Above/below

Necklace: heirloom | Dress: Target | Belt: Target | Sandals: Ross | Fingers: butter London Aston

I don't really like the hi-lo hem trend going on right now. It's like a cape for your butt, right? But hey, on this dress, it works. And I couldn't resist this pattern. It's so very pretty. Also pretty: my charger, plugged into my computer on one end and the wall on the other. 100% IS BACK.

How a cat says I missed you

Necklace: gift from parents | Top: Target | Belt: Target | Skirt: Talbots | Sandals: Ross

After driving over 1400 miles, and eating great food, and seeing great people, and doing great things, there is nothing better than walking into your bedroom, being noticed by your cat, and immediately hearing the loud motor of a happy purr.

Ps. Here's this week's inspiration for Style Imitating Art! In Bed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Awesome dude.

Eight of thirty

As I mentioned, I celebrated a birthday over the weekend! For me personally it was a big birthday--I am now 26. And 26 is really a no frills birthday for most people, but it was pretty introspective for me. When I was in high school, I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't get married until I was 26. I probably assumed at the time that I was actually going to have a boyfriend and that I was just waiting for 26 to come for me to marry. But here I am, at 26, as single as they come, and none too upset about it. Some people try to label others as picking family over career or vice versa, and I guess I decided to go with career. I'm a firm believer, though, in being able to have what you want if you work hard for it, so maybe that husband is on the horizon. For now, though, I'm happy to let 26 be what it will. And I promise funny posts will return tomorrow!
