Keeping it real

Sweatshirt: West Point, clearly | Sweater: Anthropologie | Skirt: Talbots | Tights: Target | Flats: Banana Republic | Boots: Ariat

I had to feed the horses before I had a chance to take photos, so the second picture in this post is the beautiful image that my horses saw when I came out to feed them. I thought you all would be jealous of missing out on that outfit, so I'm just making sure I don't start some uprising over my style.

I've worn this skirt a ton since purchasing it on a deep discount from Talbots, but it's never appeared here. Amended! I've actually usually worn it with yellow or white, so this is a bit of a switch for me. I really like it, though. You never steer me wrong, Talbots. Well, except for all the times that you do, but that's okay. It's still worth the winners you churn out. (Um, like this!)

You look nice

Necklace: JCPenney | Dress: JCPenney | Belt: Target | Tights: Target | Wedges: Target

For some reason, I received a lot of compliments on how "nice" I looked today. I'm not really sure I know what that means. I know it's a compliment only and that people simply want to commend me on my style, but then I wonder to myself--do I not look nice on other days? What, exactly, makes this outfit nicer than others I've worn in recent history? Is it because this dress is flattering, is it because everything is in the same colour family, is it because my hair is a little taller than usual? What is it about nice that makes me overanalyze everything, while the more loaded I like that dress doesn't bother me at all? Is it because it's about the total package, instead of one piece, that makes me second guess? Because instead of being about what I wear, it's about how I look as a whole. Maybe that's where the struggle comes from.

Or maybe it's because there are far better words to use. Call me dashing and I'll eat out of your palm all day.

this is my "will big haired wonders never cease?" face

Necklace: J.Crew Factory | Sweater: JCPenney | Belt: Target | Skirt: JCPenney | Tights: Target | Heels: Jeffrey Campbell

This outfit serves for those of you who loved the matchy-matchy of this outfit.

I had a very lovely weekend for two reasons. First, my professor emailed me Friday evening to say she was very impressed by my recent paper and I should seriously consider submitting my writing for publication somewhere. Haha, clearly she's never read this blog! But honestly, I was very honoured to receive that kind of comment from someone who actually has been published herself. Goodness.

More importantly, though, I spent much of the weekend beating my friends at various things--one at his own game, another at bowling, and the last at the Oscar ballot. Cheers to my male friends for willing (or unwilling, if it's bowling) to take a hit to make me happy. Also, thank you all for getting drunk during our encounters. It makes my life so much more entertaining!

Arms McGuestPost

Cardigan: Target | Top: J.Crew Factory | Belt: some ribbon, y'all | Skirt: handmade | Tights: Target | Heels: Urban Outfitters

One of my new favourite bloggesses, Nicole of Writes Like a Girl, sweetly asked me to take part in a gust post series she is doing on loving your body parts. I generally don't talk about my body on here (I mean, you guys can see it, right? I wouldn't be saying much more than you already knew!), but I really loved the concept behind Nicole's series--to pick a part you love (or hate) and write a love letter to it. I have always had a love/hate relationship with my arms, so I chose to write about them. My post is here, and I highly recommend taking a trip around the rest of Nicole's blog, especially her I Believe tab. She is stylish and kind of fantastic in general!

Style Imitating Art: Untitled

It's Style Imitating Art time again, folks! Sol Lewitt's untitled lithograph was this week's inspiration. This is one that I've been very excited to post, and there are some majorly awesome submissions. So let's roll!

First up is KezzieAG, whose skirt I love. And the belt, too!

Next is Jen of Librarian for Life and Style, who not only came up with an outfit cut also made a Polyvore full of inspiration! Fantastic stuff, Jen :)

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey had "cold weather" (so it was like 50?) and had to replan her outfit, but I think she did pretty well for short notice! The skirt (dress!) is a solid match for the art.

Teddi. Hat. Adorable, omg.

I really like Jan's submission!

Ok. I love basically every piece of Noelle's (of Tilly's Notions) outfit, but those tights are amazeballs. Seriously.

Rebekah of From the Mixed-Up Files... has PEPLUM, you guys.

And then there's me. What's up.

Thanks for participating, ladies! Another wonderful batch of submissions. My post will be up in a bit, and next week Salazar will post her pick. Great work, y'all!

Hair today

I thought you all would enjoy a little view into the history of my hair, as told by the numerous cards in my wallet!

So from left to right, little stories about each one:

My casino ID. I worked in a casino when I lived in NJ (in human resources, not on the floor), and my picture was terrible. I mean awful. So I fixed it! I have no idea why I still have this ID, because it's useless.

My college ID. The day I took my photo for my college ID, it was hotter than hell in summer at school. It was my first day on campus as an accepted student and I was really nervous about meeting people. My future neighbour (and still good friend) said that on that first day she was terrified of me and that I looked like a real bitch. The picture conveys that well, I think. I hang onto this ID because it still gets me student discounts at the movies & in museums!

My Biltmore member ID. The Biltmore Estate's a swank place, y'all. My parents and I are all members and take friends/family up there when they haven't gone, because it's a site to behold. They started issuing IDs, and the day I took this picture it was also hotter than hell in summer. Sarah was with me that day. It was good stuff! I think this was my favourite hair ID photo.

My Library of Congress reader card. I have a purpose for this one, it wasn't just for fun. My dad claims that his senior thesis on international trials blahblahblah is in the Library of Congress, because it was original research. Anyone can get an LC reader card if they have research to attend to, and my research was researching my dad's research. So I had the card made. My hair covers so much of me here that I may or may not be naked. (Spoiler alert: my dad's paper is, in fact, at the Library of Congress!)

Last but not least, my debit card. I look weird in this picture and my hair is not in finest form--the lady made me take off my glasses and push back my hair to see my face--but that picture was taken on this day, which was actually a very good hair day indeed.

Curious, isn't it? How I can get so much older, but my hair really stays the same. I wouldn't have it any other wa, though. I love this shrub on my head.

Long day

Dress: Target | Belt: off a skirt from Kohl's | Tights: in the trash can because there's a big hole in them | Boots: Target

Sometimes it only takes one picture.

edit: I seem to have found the issue with being unable to pin my pictures from here! So pin away, ladies (and gents?).

I don't like the sound of mature

Cardigan: Target | Dress: Anthropologie | Tights: Target | Heels: Urban Outfitters

Who watches Downton Abbey? No spoilers, but here is the only GIF you could ever need for any Downton Abbey fandom. Also, no shame, my favourite is Edith. I relate with her sad sack never get a man but can drive a car and write for a paper attitude. Also I like her hair. Also, Downton Sixbey's Hedith is the best part, aside from everything else in the parody, which is also the best part. I'll stop now.

Just kidding. Here is an interesting article about what Salon poses as The Lady Edith Problem.

Everything: Target

I haven't been to Target since I was in Flagstaff in January. I had excellent resolve. And then I needed a few spray bottles for work. And then I walked out with two dresses and a rewind of the counter to 0 days since a Target fix.

This outfit was inspired by the outfit Audrey put together yesterday. She asked about yellow and green, a colour combo I love, but I realised I don't wear it very often. Thanks for this outfit, Target. Brought to you not by Target but by my wallet, in a moment of weakness.
