Back in the swing

Cardigan: Target
Top: Anthropologie
Skirt: Boden
Tights: Target
Heels: Anthropologie

After an unexpected three day vacation trapped in my house (thanks Snowstorm 2011!), work has reopened. I wore my barn boots to drive and walk because the roads were still icy in places, but fortunately no slides off the road to report.

These heels were one of my very first purchases from Anthropologie, which is comparable for me to Tania's weak spot for J.Crew. I don't buy a whole lot of stuff from Anthro because of their prices & sizes, but these shoes were a relative steal and I love how they look. They were very uncomfortable until I learned what shoe inserts were, and now my feet are happy!

Please ignore my Harsh Face. The sun was blinding! I wanted to show the neckline of this top, which is pretty much the best part of the shirt. There is sparkly embroidery, which is an instant winner in my book.

Let me tell you about my coat

(Click for a larger version)

Cream coat: Target
Purple coat: JCPenney
Red coat: Gap
Shirt: Old Navy
Jeans: Walmart
Boots: Tractor Supply

It's Monday, and normally I'd be rolling around on the floor at work. But instead, a giant system dumped six inches of snow overnight and the entire county has essentially shut down. The perfect time for sleeping in and an outerwear blog post!

Today's guest star is Spud, my neighbour's dog. His owners have an electrical fence for him but he breaks through it regularly and comes to visit us. He's really sweet and a lot of fun, though, so we don't mind. He spent most of this photo shoot rolling and shoving his face in the snow. Since I can't really use my car as a tripod today, my mom was kind enough to take the pictures for this post. Thanks mom!

I've had this cream coat for a long time. It's boiled wool and unlined, so it's not very thick, but it's fairly warm. I wore it a lot in college, when I wasn't outside very long and I was young and foolish. It's a good fall coat though.

This red coat is fantastic. It's warm, it's lined, and even has a small chest pocket in the lining which is perfect for my iPod! I wore this coat a lot in college as well, especially in case of snow or really low temps. By really low I mean 20s, since I went to college in Virginia and the lowest I remember it ever getting there was 9. And I went horseback riding that day.

This purple coat is my most recent acquisition, but I love it. It's very, very warm and is longer than my other coats, which is great when I'm wearing a skirt. I bought it a couple weeks ago and it's already my daily work coat, in which I drive and battle my way across the freezing cold parking lot.

Things I look for when I pick out a coat:

Fit. This is absolutely the most important thing. I check the arms first, because my arms are the largest part of my body. If it fits with the arms down, then I do all sorts of things--I put my arms out like I'm driving, up in the air, I reach back. I do all this with the coat buttoned and unbuttoned. I consider how well the coat will fit with a thick sweater, cardigan, long sleeve shirt or short sleeve shirt on underneath. Put the collar up, then put it down. If there's a scarf nearby, put it on under the coat and over it to see how it feels. Check how you look in the mirror too--the coat may feel good on but you may see that the hem is two inches shorter on the left than the right. I once found a gorgeous red coat with a gradient to black at the bottom but the sleeves weren't long enough and the collar was too loose pulled up around my neck. Back to the rack.
Design. Do I need a knee length coat? Is the fabric thick enough to last four or five seasons of wear? Is it lined? Some coats I'll veto because the sleeves are meant to be bracelet length (rarely too long!) or the collar is cut oddly. Check for imperfections, loose threads and buttons, or torn lining. Also check the cleaning requirements--most nice winter coats are dry clean only, so consider that if you tend to be messy like me. (I honestly don't know how that cream coat has stayed clean for so long!)
Colour & style. Least important, certainly, but still important. Would you rather wear a red hip length coat or a black knee length one? Would you wear a coat in ANY colour or only black? How do you feel about patterns and gradients? Do you want your outfit to match your coat? I wore only black coats for a very long time, but I found that a coloured coat is usually more my style, especially since they're less likely to show cat hair!
FUN FACTOR!

There are a lot of things to consider when looking for a winter coat, mainly because they have to last longer than the average piece of clothing and they're abused regularly by the elements. Is there anything specific you look for in a winter coat?

Balanced

Necklace: gift from mom, via Etsy
Cardigan: Gap
Tank: Walmart
Pants: JCPenney
Socks: Walmart
Flats: Shoe Carnival
Nail polish: China Glaze, For Audrey

I believe this may be the first outfit compiled entirely of items not from Target.

I work in a library, and my current big project (among a large menagerie of other duties) I cleaning all the CD shelving, shifting all the shelving, and then moving all the CDs to give them more room. Wearing black and white is such a bad idea when you're moving metal covered by a thick coat of dust, but fortunately dust does wipe off easily. I was armed with wipes and Swiffers so I remain unscathed (for now). It's hard to balance shelves and more than once I almost fell over, but I somehow stayed upright.

My shoes are comfortable and purple. I have no complaints.

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I wear nail polish nearly daily. This is a case of my nail polish being a significant part of my outfit--it adds an additional colour to the outfit and draws out the pattern in my tank (I think so anyway!). I bought this colour with some of my Christmas money and I have to say it is beyond worth the cost; I received at least half a dozen compliments at work from coworkers and patrons alike say how much thy loved this colour.

I put this necklace at the top of my Christmas list this year and was so thrilled to receive it from my mom! I love pinecones and spray paint them silver and gold for use as Christmas decorations throughout the house. This necklace is perfect!

We're under a winter storm watching until Tuesday. 4-7 inches expected here in upper South Carolina. Yikes! My shelves may have to wait.

In honour of the Pig

Scarf: J.Crew
Orange top: Anthropologie
Green top: Old Navy
Cords: LL Bean
Socks: Walmart
Flats: Target
Nail polish: China Glaze Side Saddle

The local Piggly Wiggly recently shut its doors, and I took the opportunity to sneak in behind the building with my car and found an interesting venue for today's pictures! Thanks, Pig. I'll miss you.

The cami I bought from Old Navy (for about $4) has been invaluable. I have a longer than average torso and average legs, which causes some shirts to be a bit on the short side of things. The cami is more than long enough to avoid salaciousness, and I love the colour. I also have it in black!

Floating hair! Amazing! I'm so talented. This picture took four tries so let's pretend I don't have zits and the camera's shadow is nonexistent, okay?

A lesson in terrible lighting

Necklace: Gift from a friend, via Etsy
Cardigan: Target
Striped top: Target
Skirt: JCPenney
Tights: Target
Boots: Target

I work weird hours. Sometimes mornings, sometimes all day, sometimes all night. It varies throughout the week. I spent all day at work and this is the best I could do in terms of lighting because I am sick of the basement and the ugly armoire! This cardigan is actually bright pink, even though it looks blush. (I am considering a blush cardigan a must for this spring, and Target just started selling them!)

My friend stumbled upon a blog called What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear a few months back, and since then I have been an avid follower. For Christmas, my friend sent me a VERY Emma Pillsbury-inspired necklace that I love and have been wanting to fit into my outfits. This works, I think.

Finally, here's what happens when you have bad lighting and your car is your tripod.

Let that be a lesson to you!

Resolve

Necklace: Anthropologie
Top: JCPenney
Skirt: JCPenney
Tights: Target
Wedges: Shoe Carnival

Okay, here's the thing. My rule, usually, is no resolutions. I think it's a bit silly because they're mostly fodder for the beginning of the year, no one sticks to them or even remembers what they are, and because I'm large, people always expect my resolution to be to lose weight. So I always said to hell with that.

This year I'm making a resolution and making it stick: make this blog successful.

Whatever successful means to me, I'll gauge it at the end of the year and see what happens. Five new followers? New venues, better photos, more creative outfits? I don't know what success will be, but I'll know it if when it comes.

Maybe this resolve is thanks to my outfit, which makes me feel quite powerful indeed. I love this top because it makes my shoulders look wider and has a touch of military feel without actually having any military details.

I also love this necklace, which I thought would look kind of lame with the stripes but it ended up being just what the outfit needed. A bit of sparkle.

Best part? Foxtail.

So now that I feel powerful and ready to take on the world, camera in one hand and tights in the other, tell me your new year's resolutions!

Make do or do without

Sweater: JCPenney
Pants: JCPenney
Socks: Walmart
Wedges: Show Carnival

I love this sweater that my mom gave me for Christmas. I thought I wouldn't and I actually didn't on the hanger, but I really like how it looks on me. Patterns can be a bit of a fight but this top is pretty fantastic. It's also warm without being bulky, which is perfect under a winter coat.

These pants are also new but long overdue in my closet--I've been meaning to get a pair of khaki pants that fit for a while. They are wrinkly because I wore them all day at work! They're very, very comfortable though, which makes me want about 20 more pairs.

And I'm still not sure how I feel about my darker hair. Winter and all, my hair's supposed to be darker, but I miss the red!

Did the holidays fill any gaps in your closet?
