Pool scum

Cardigan: gift from mom | Scarf: gift from mom | Dress: Banana Republic Outlet | Belt: Target | Tights: JCPenney | Booties: Old Navy

This is what having a pool in October looks like. It's not clear water, it's not blue. It's green with bugs floating in it. Don't worry, there are a variety of chemicals we use to clean it up every May.

You won't catch me hopping in anytime soon, though.

Style Imitating Art: Watson and the Shark

It's Style Imitating Art time, you guys! We have some new people this week, which is super exciting!

First up is Rebekah of From the Mixed Up Files. I don't do ruffles myself but I absolutely love the look on her!

Jen of Librarian for Life Style (another librarian, you guys!) looks a) comfy and b) stylish. I love the colour of her scarf.

Next is Pao of Project Minima, who kills me every time by Photoshopping herself into whatever artwork we choose. I LOVE IT.

Kezzie of KezzieAG is a new face this week, and I'm excited to have her! Super creative with the broom, right? It's adorable.

(I also love the colour of her bag.)

Noelle of Tilly's Notions is also a newcomer, and she did a great job too.

The necklace is perfect.

Lastly, my awesome cohosts for SIA. first, Vivienne of Thrifted Shift, who submitted two excellent complementary outfits for the painting. (Sorry Vivienne, I thought two of you looked better next to each other!)

And Salazar, of 14 Shades of Grey, whose photo is just stunning. She always nails it.

And last, here's me! (I'll put up a full outfit post for this outfit tomorrow.)

Thank you all so, so much for participating! I love SIA and I'm glad you all do too :)

Variations on a theme: Pink and blue

I thought it would be interesting to go through the archives and take a look at the pink and blue outfit combos I've had since starting this blog. I've been wearing pink and blue a lot lately, and I've found it to be a really flexible pairing and a great alternative to the patriotic-skewing blue and red. So, you know. Here they are.

If you're interested in SIA, I'm still accepting submissions! Email me with your photo by the end of business tomorrow and you'll be included!

Baking for the sake of baking

Necklace: J.Crew Outlet | Top: J.Crew Outlet | Belt: Target | Skirt: Talbots | Wedges: Payless

It is officially fall. Not because I wore boots (when it was still 85), and not because it's cooler outside (because it isn't). But I've dusted off my tried and true pumpkin cookie recipe (per E.) and there are approximately four dozen cookies curing in the oven as I type this. The hard part is going to be keeping them away from my parents long enough for them to cool.

SIA: PSA

I'm hosting SIA this week! Yesssss. Here's my pick:

Watson and the Shark, John Singleton Copley, 1778
Oil on canvas

The original version of this painting is housed at the National Gallery of Art, and it is massive. (I have a thing for big paintings.) I was both thrilled and overwhelmed this first time I saw this painting, and I spend a good amount of time looking at it every time I'm at the NGA. There's something so visually appealing about the contrast between light and dark, the highlighting, the romanticization of the incident. It's lovely. Well, aside from the shark's eye. It's like a bad rendering of Jaws.

Send me your submissions (and accompanying links, if you've posted about SIA!) by the night (EST) of October 8th. I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

Also, you know. For kicks.
